Professional Journey

Nine stages, one continuous discipline

Each stage builds on the one before it — from understanding how machinery fails, to understanding how defects form, to detecting them, to assembling the workforce that inspects them.

01

Mechanical Engineering Foundation

Heavy Equipment Service & Field Inspection
Construction, Mining & Quarrying Equipment Industry

Dhatchanamoorthy began his professional engineering journey in the heavy equipment sector, working in demanding field environments including mines, quarries, crusher plants, construction sites and roadwork projects.

His work involved service support, equipment inspection, preventive and routine maintenance, breakdown troubleshooting and restoring idle machinery to operational condition.

He developed hands-on exposure to the mechanical, hydraulic, powertrain, undercarriage and structural systems of hydraulic excavators, gaining practical understanding of equipment failures, maintenance requirements, component condition and field reliability. The role also involved customer coordination, service follow-up and support for machine, spare-parts and maintenance requirements.

His early exposure to crack detection and weld inspection using NDT techniques created the first connection between his mechanical engineering background and the field of Non-Destructive Testing.

02

Manufacturing Quality Foundation

Foundry, Casting, Machining & Metrology
Engineering Components Manufacturing Industry

He subsequently expanded his engineering experience into the foundry and manufacturing quality environment, gaining exposure to the complete component-quality chain — from foundry and casting processes through machining, dimensional control and final inspection.

His experience covered High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC), CNC machining, incoming inspection, final inspection, supplier quality and metrology, including inspection of engineering components such as valves, nozzles and other cast and machined components.

He developed practical capability in engineering drawing interpretation, GD&T, dimensional inspection, casting and machining quality assessment, CMM, X-ray inspection, hardness testing and material-composition analysis. His supplier-quality responsibilities also provided exposure to externally processed and machined components, supplier visits, quality follow-up and coordination between suppliers, production teams and customer requirements.

This stage established a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, casting quality, machining quality, dimensional accuracy, material characteristics, defect identification, process control and supplier quality. It also created an important technical bridge into NDT: understanding not only how defects are detected, but how manufacturing processes and material behaviour can contribute to those defects in the first place.

03

NDT & Tube Inspection

Advanced Non-Destructive Testing & Asset Integrity

Building on his mechanical engineering and manufacturing-quality foundation, Dhatchanamoorthy transitioned into Non-Destructive Testing and industrial inspection, progressively specialising in advanced NDT and tube integrity inspection.

An early international refinery assignment provided exposure to borescope and Remote Visual Inspection, refinery operations and collaboration with tube-inspection teams. This experience introduced him to the practical application of NDT findings within operating industrial assets and contributed to his decision to specialise further in tube inspection.

He subsequently developed dedicated expertise in Eddy Current Testing and advanced tube inspection, working across domestic and international shutdown and turnaround projects. His responsibilities have included inspection preparation, data acquisition, inspection execution, analysis and interpretation, defect evaluation, tube integrity assessment, reporting and coordination with client, maintenance and engineering teams.

04

International Inspection & Asset Integrity

Shutdown, Turnaround & Maintenance Projects

Through freelance inspection assignments, Dhatchanamoorthy has gained exposure to shutdown, turnaround and maintenance projects across India and international markets.

His international exposure spans the Middle East, GCC, Southeast Asia and Africa, with project experience associated with major industrial organisations and facilities including Qatar Shell, Oryx GTL, Saudi Aramco / SAMREF, YASREF, Petro Rabigh, OQ Refinery, EQUATE Petrochemical Company, PETRONAS and Sonatrach, among others.

His Indian project exposure includes organisations and facilities associated with NPCIL, BPCL, HPCL, IOCL, NTPC, Reliance Industries, Adani Power, NLC and other industrial organisations.

Working in shutdown and turnaround environments has provided practical exposure to time-critical inspection programmes, multidisciplinary teams, client coordination, maintenance requirements, inspection reporting and asset-integrity decision support.

05

Eddy Current Weld Inspection

Shipyard, Offshore & FPSO Inspection

Following his CSWIP ISO 9712 Eddy Current Testing Level II — Welds certification, Dhatchanamoorthy expanded his inspection capabilities from tube inspection into Eddy Current weld inspection.

His assignment with Seatrium Shipyard marked an additional expansion into shipyard and offshore-related inspection, including work associated with Petrobras P-80, P-82 and P-83 FPSO vessels.

This experience added weld integrity assessment and FPSO-related inspection exposure to his established background in tube inspection and industrial asset integrity.

06

Business Development, Training & Industrial Recruitment

NDT Training, Engineering Services & Manpower Industry

Alongside his freelance inspection activities, Dhatchanamoorthy gained experience in business development, technical training outreach and industrial recruitment within an organisation operating across NDT training, engineering services, consultancy and manpower solutions.

His work involved developing relationships with engineering colleges, diploma institutions and polytechnic colleges, conducting guest lectures, workshops, awareness programmes and career-development sessions to introduce students to opportunities within the Oil & Gas, NDT and industrial sectors.

He also developed direct relationships with industrial organisations by engaging with HR and recruitment teams across manufacturing, fabrication and third-party inspection companies to understand their workforce requirements. His responsibilities included organising placement drives, identifying suitable candidates, coordinating candidate selection and connecting trained students and experienced professionals with companies requiring technical manpower.

This experience provided an early understanding of the recruitment and manpower ecosystem — employer engagement, requirement identification, candidate sourcing, placement coordination and professional relationship management — and became the foundation for his broader involvement in technical manpower sourcing and international project mobilisation.

Interconnected disciplines, not isolated roles

His professional journey has developed through interconnected disciplines rather than isolated roles. Each stage explains the next: you cannot judge whether a defect matters without knowing how the equipment is used, and you cannot judge how it formed without knowing how the component was made.

Together, these experiences provide a multidisciplinary perspective connecting engineering, manufacturing quality, inspection, maintenance, asset integrity and technical workforce capability.

Today, Dhatchanamoorthy brings this combined perspective to his work as an Asset Integrity & Advanced NDT Inspection Professional, Technical Manpower Consultant, NDT Trainer and Oil & Gas Career Consultant.
